Semiconductor ETF September: 14 stocks rose; only Broadcom fell

Semiconductor ETF $SOXX.ETF 9 month-end adjusted gains: up 11.34%. Based on the Sept. 30 portfolio snapshot, the top 15 holdings account for 78.14% of the weight: 14 rose and 1 fell.

The two biggest gainers happen to be the top two by weight. Intel $INTCB 9 had a weight of 9.59% and rose 34.32% by month-end; AMD $AMDB had a weight of 9.28% and rose 29.96%. Equipment stocks strengthened in tandem: Applied Materials rose 11.56%, KLA rose 11.10%, and Lam Research rose 9.08%.

The list also changed. Teradyne and SK Hynix newly entered the top 15, while TSMC and NXP slid to positions 16 and 17. TSMC’s shares decreased from 4.6689 million to 3.1544 million, down 32.44%; its weight fell from 4.65% to 3.00%. Meanwhile, the stock price still rose 10.14% in the same period—so it was reduced in allocation but not fully sold. NXP saw its share count increase, but its weight declined.

Going forward, I’m watching two things: whether Broadcom can stop its two consecutive months of declines, and whether this round of gains led by Intel and AMD will spread to equipment stocks and memory. September’s advance coverage is much broader than August, but the weight is concentrated in just two names. Once it turns back, index volatility will be amplified.
