DeFi’s seemingly unremarkable backdoor permissions are often the deadliest loophole that can instantly drain a liquidity pool—today, a treasury project on BNB Chain, 79thVault, reportedly had its operational private key stolen. Within just one hour, as much as $12.5 million worth of assets were maliciously withdrawn, sounding yet another stern warning about smart contract access control.
【A fatal authorization flaw granted to privileged roles: 79thVault drained of $12.5 million】
According to cybersecurity monitoring firm Defimon Alerts, as reported by Dongyuetong, between October 7 and 8, the 79thVault project on BNB Chain suffered a serious funds-draining incident, with losses estimated at about $12.5 million. Security experts analyzed that within the project’s token contract, 79AU, there is a privileged function designed to be callable only by OPERATOR_ROLE (the operational role). This function allows unrestricted transfer of liquidity from the 79AU/USDT trading pair on PancakeSwap directly to a specified address, and it also forcibly calls the sync() function to synchronize reserves.
On-chain data shows that within a short span of one hour, the team’s operational hot wallet beginning with 0x019b sent out a total of up to 2.01 million units of 79AU to the attacker’s address in 7 transactions (amounts were 10k, 100k, 100k, 300k, and three transactions of 500k each). Under the automated market maker (AMM) mechanism, removing one-sided tokens from the liquidity pool artificially inflated the remaining token price quotes. The attacker then initiated around 95 sell orders, dumping all the moved tokens back into the pool to cash out. As a result, the USDT reserves of the trading pair crashed from $15.2 million to $3.9 million, for a net loss of about $11.3 million. Ultimately, the attacker obtained 16,249 BNB and transferred them to an address starting with 0x629b. Notably, only 41 seconds after the money laundering, the operational hot wallet sent 3.79 BNB back to that hacker address again—strongly suggesting that the operational private key has been fully compromised or there was internal malicious activity. The privilege has since been revoked, and the project team also proposed on-chain to retain 10% as a white-hat bounty (about $1.25 million), urging the other party to return the remaining 90% of the funds.
【On-chain capital under pressure and the liquidity test: Can BNB’s valuation defense hold?】
As a core asset and settlement medium in the BNB Chain ecosystem, BNB in this incident directly served as the “exit” tool used by the attacker to exchange and cash out. Although the potential selling pressure from 16,249 BNB is limited as a proportion compared with the billions of dollars in daily spot trading volume across the BNB network, in a macro environment of high interest rates and tight liquidity, questions about contract structure security can easily amplify ecosystem discounting emotionally.
In Binance’s spot market, influenced by the broader crypto market pullback and the rippling effects of the incident, BNB is currently trading in a narrow range around $758, with the 24-hour high-low range between $753 and $776. Despite the need for the short-term market to absorb potential on-chain money-laundering selling pressure, after the attack, neither PancakeSwap nor the BNB Chain mainnet experienced a systemic contract shutdown. Meanwhile, the project team promptly stripped the privileged role, demonstrating the ecosystem’s ability to isolate when a single-point agreement is compromised.
【Key observations for the future】
For market participants, the reconciliation indicators for the ecosystem impact are not just about where a single hacker address’s funds go, but about monitoring two major signals: first, whether the 16,249 BNB held by the attacker will directly hit centralized exchange order book depth without mixing, or whether both parties agree to recover all assets of more than $11 million through a 10% bounty mechanism; second, whether the total value locked (TVL) in PancakeSwap’s core mainstream pools remains stable over the next 48 hours.
From a technical market structure perspective, BNB’s current key support zone is the tightly traded platform between $745 and $750. If the bulls can build a base here and hold the $750 whole-number level, along with the broader market stabilizing, there is a chance for a rebound to the $780–$800 resistance area. Conversely, if sell pressure continues to expand and the broader market weakens, causing BNB to break below the critical $745 support, short-term risk includes retesting the $720–$730 range.
