The IMF’s message this time is actually pretty straightforward: although tokenized markets are growing quickly, they’re still small in scale and highly fragmented.
The tokenized repo market currently sees about $300 billion–$350 billion in daily trading, while other tokenized assets total around $65 billion. Compared with traditional financial markets, they’re still nowhere near the same scale. The IMF also pointed out that legal frameworks, regulation, and interoperability between different platforms are all obstacles holding back further expansion of tokenization.
So I think it’s a bit early to claim that “RWAs are about to upend traditional finance.” The technology is already taking off, but the market and the rules haven’t fully caught up yet.
Do you think tokenization will take off next, or will it take a few more years?
