It’s not that you don’t get opportunities—you waste them all in dead time.
You try to catch every market move. You want to trade trends, ranges, breakouts, and pullbacks.
You’re busy from morning till night, but your account hasn’t grown by year-end.
I know this problem all too well.
In my early years of trading, I’d place seven or eight trades a day. I’d jump in whenever I saw a price move, terrified of missing out. The result? I paid a fortune in fees, and my account kept shrinking.
It wasn’t that the market didn’t offer opportunities. I was treating every random fluctuation as one.
The market spends most of its time going nowhere. There are only a handful of truly worthwhile moves each month. If you insist on forcing trades during dead time, you might make a little when you win, but lose a fortune when you don’t.
Worse, trading too often makes you restless and impulsive. You stop setting stop-losses and rush to take profits.
You think you’re trading, but really, your emotions are doing the trading for you.
Then I forced myself to change one thing: I’d place just one trade a day, then close the software once it was done.
It was tough at first. I always felt like I was losing money if I wasn’t watching the charts. But after sticking with it for a while, I realized that trading less actually improved the quality of my trades.
Later, I tightened my criteria even more: I only trade when the trend is clear, volume and price action align, and price breaks through a key level. If even one of those three is missing, I sit on my hands.
If I can’t read the market, I stay in cash. I avoid sideways markets and don’t chase the news.
Gradually, my account became more stable.
It wasn’t because my technique had improved. I’d finally learned what not to do.
If you’re stuck in losing trades or on the verge of blowing up, look back through your trade history. Did you trade every kind of market move except the right ones? By the time the opportunity came, had you already burned through your capital?
