According to CNBC, MDA Space CEO Mike Greenley said space-based missile defense is becoming a realistic option as countries face more advanced threats, including hypersonic missiles from Russia and China. He said satellites could help detect, track and potentially intercept incoming missiles, and argued that such systems do not have to cost more than other advanced defense technologies. Greenley also said North America needs to be able to monitor threats coming over the top of the Earth and track and intercept them. He added that space-based interceptors positioned to take out missiles or other threats would be no more expensive than other complex weapon systems or protection systems. Greenley said demand from governments and businesses seeking alternatives to Elon Musk's Starlink, along with efforts to build sovereign satellite communications networks, could lead to multiple competing networks over the next five to seven years.
