Vitalik Issues a Warning: AI Could Impact Encryption Security Even Earlier Than Quantum Computing!
In his latest reminder, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin says that the acceleration of mathematical research driven by AI may be introducing a previously underestimated risk to blockchain cryptography.
He notes that, in the past, the market generally believed:
š¹ Elliptic curve cryptography ā could be broken by quantum computing in the future
š¹ Hash algorithms ā relatively secure
š¹ Grid (lattice) cryptography ā believed to have quantum-resistant capabilities
But now, this assessment may need to be reconsidered.
Vitalik believes that AIās mathematical progress over the next two years is highly likely to seriously undermine the real-world security of lattice cryptography, meaning that technologiesāincluding some post-quantum cryptography approachesāalso cannot simply be assumed to be āabsolutely secure.ā (The Block)
Whatās even more noteworthy is that he did not urge users to panic and move assets immediately.
š If itās convenient, you could consider using addresses that have never initiated transactions and where no public key has yet been exposed; but donāt move funds in a rush due to panic, because incorrect configuration itself can also lead to losses. (The Block)
What AI brings is not only an efficiency revolutionāit may also be redefining the effective lifespan of ācryptographic security.ā
If AI can truly compress decades of mathematical progress into just a few yearsāor even lessāthen the entire crypto industryās security assumptions may need to be reassessed.
