Vitalik suddenly sounds the alarm
AI could break cryptography before quantum computing does

Vitalik posted a warning on X:
AI’s ability to reason mathematically
could significantly weaken lattice-based cryptography within two years.

Even the ECDSA elliptic-curve algorithm used by BTC and ETH wallets
could be cracked sooner than people expect.

Whoa.
That’s a little scary.

The industry used to focus on defending against quantum computing.
The thinking was that elliptic curves would be broken first,
while hashes and lattice-based cryptography could still hold up.

But now Vitalik is saying
that as AI gets better at mathematical research,
lattice-based cryptography could face a serious real-world security threat
within the next two years.
He specifically mentioned ML-DSA, fully homomorphic encryption, and various lattice-based schemes.

What makes AI so powerful?
The key is that AI can quickly find mathematical vulnerabilities
and uncover algorithmic backdoors that humans might struggle to spot.

Vitalik also offered advice to everyday users:
Keep your funds in cold addresses that have never sent a transaction,
if possible—but don’t rush to move assets on a large scale.
Moving funds to a new wallet carries its own operational risks.
He even lost more money through mistakes during his own wallet migration
than he did to hacker attacks.

So this is actually pretty important.
After all, every day we sign transactions and secure our wallets,
we rely on cryptography behind the scenes.
If that fails,
we’re in serious trouble.

In the short term,
the news is unlikely to have much emotional impact
or trigger a sell-off.
But it does raise a long-term question about foundational security.

It’s worth keeping an eye on
whether new cryptographic security standards are adopted in the future.
