Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin issued a warning on X on October 7, and it’s now being discussed in the crypto community. Key points:
What did he say?
In his view, AI-driven mathematical research could significantly weaken the practical security of lattice-based cryptography (such as ML-DSA and FHE) within the next two years.
ECDSA, the signature system used by Bitcoin and ETH wallets, could also be at risk sooner than expected.
He believes AI could bring as much progress in mathematics over the next two years as the field has made in the past 50 years.
His recommendations
Prioritize hash-based cryptography where possible, and use more conservative security parameters for lattice-based cryptography. He also suggested increasing key sizes tenfold for long-term use.
Keep funds at an address that has never made a transaction, as long as doing so doesn’t compromise any benefits.
The privacy protocol avoids storing encrypted data directly on-chain and prioritizes off-chain signature verification in multisig wallets.
Don’t panic
Vitalik made it clear that there’s no need to rush to move funds right now. He said he has lost more money through migrations done incorrectly than through hacks. In other words, rushing to move wallets is itself a risk. According to reports, this warning also had no direct impact on the market.
Ethereum’s preparations
Ethereum’s Lean roadmap has gradually shifted toward hash-based signatures over the past year, so this warning aligns with its ongoing direction.
What ordinary users should do
Never share your seed phrase with anyone
Keep large sums of funds in a hardware wallet
Don’t click any “new security migration” links without verifying them—scammers may take advantage of this situation.
