The crypto market is being dragged around by macro forces today. $BTC fell below 84,000, triggered by Iran’s attack on an oil tanker. Brent crude is nearing $100, the dollar is strengthening, and risk assets are taking a hit across the board.
The Fed minutes were even more unsettling: all 19 officials supported a September rate hike, and most thought another one would be needed before year-end. One-year inflation expectations surged to 3.9%, a three-year high, with AI infrastructure spending and the energy shock singled out as inflation drivers.
What’s keeping me up at night is the credit market: the 30-year Treasury yield hit 5.7%, its highest level since 2002; Oracle’s CDS hit a record; and Meta’s data center debt is nearing its breaking point. If things go wrong, the safe-haven narrative for $BTC will probably be the first thing investors abandon.
There’s some good news, too: the CFTC chair said they’ll provide “clear rules” for crypto whether or not Congress acts; following SEC approval, an application has been filed for a 3x leveraged $BTC $ETH ETF. On Solana, Orca and Loopscale merged to form Formation; Sui has reached 40M TPS and teamed up with Google Cloud. The ecosystems are starting to compete hard on their own.
My take: play defense in the short term, don’t overextend, and wait to see how the two gray rhinos—developments in Iran and the Fed—play out.
