🚨 Vitalik issues a sudden warning:
Could AI threaten the security of Ethereum wallets “within two years”? Is ETH facing a real risk? 🔥

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently raised a risk worth paying close attention to: Over roughly the next two years, the rapid advancement of AI could begin to pose a real challenge to the cryptographic security assumptions that blockchains currently rely on.
To be clear, this does not mean that “AI has already cracked Ethereum.”
The real danger is that if breakthroughs in AI-assisted cryptanalysis, lattice attacks, or similar techniques reach a certain capability threshold, the cryptographic systems that protect wallets, transactions, and smart contracts today may need to be upgraded sooner than expected. ⚠️
One of Ethereum’s most fundamental security assumptions is its elliptic-curve cryptography for account signatures, along with the hash functions that underpin much of the blockchain. If these foundations are no longer secure enough in the future, the impact would extend far beyond a single wallet.
🔥 Wallet signatures, smart contract verification, on-chain identities, and even the rapidly developing “AI + Crypto” infrastructure could all be affected.
Decentralized AI is particularly relevant. Many on-chain AI networks currently rely on cryptography to confirm model provenance, verify inference results, authenticate compute nodes, and conduct governance votes.
In other words, as long as signatures remain the basis of trust, AI + Crypto won’t be immune if cryptographic security is compromised. But the most important point here is that Vitalik is discussing a “forward-looking risk,” not an existing vulnerability.
“Two years” should be understood as a reminder: developers shouldn’t wait until cryptography is actually broken before beginning upgrades.
📌 One of the directions Ethereum is considering is advancing hash-based proof systems such as STARKs and improving the protocol’s “cryptographic agility.”
What does cryptographic agility mean?
Simply put, if a particular signature algorithm becomes insecure in the future, the system can switch to a new verification method instead of having to rebuild the entire infrastructure from scratch.
