Samsung’s third-quarter operating profit topped 100 trillion won for the first time, up nearly eightfold year over year. No other South Korean company has ever made that much in a single quarter. Prices rose across the board, from DRAM and NAND to HBM, as AI data centers snapped up almost all the available supply. Products that were being sold off cheaply while companies worked through excess inventory just two years ago now have customers lining up to get their hands on them. It’s hard to believe.

Micron took off along with it on the U.S. stock market, closing up 4% on Wednesday and recording the highest trading volume of any stock. Its quarterly net profit was up tenfold year over year. Micron is the U.S. company specializing in memory and flash storage, competing in the same sector as Samsung and SK hynix.

But memory stocks have already started to diverge. Even though they’re all riding the AI wave, SK hynix closed in the red that day, and Western Digital fell too. Micron was the only one in the green. The supply shortage is reportedly expected to last through 2027, and this price rally doesn’t look like it’s peaked yet.
