HEMI rises 13% to $0.00661: 4-hour volume surges, but don't rush to chase after OI value climbs 42%
The takeaway: HEMI's rally has been marked by simultaneous strength in spot and perpetuals, along with a surge in 4-hour trading volume. However, the notional value of open positions rose by about 42% in roughly 29 hours, and the latest funding rate has turned notably negative. Price, leverage, and perpetual pricing are not moving in one-directional alignment. For now, it is better to wait for a closing confirmation rather than chase the rally just because the price gain and trading volume have increased.
1. Spot and perpetuals are both rising, but the price has not confirmed a breakout
As of around 07:54 Beijing time on October 8, 2026, Binance spot HEMIUSDT was trading at approximately $0.006610, up 13.185% over 24 hours, with a range of $0.005210–$0.007030 and spot trading volume of approximately 14.120 million USDT. USDⓈ-M HEMIUSDT perpetuals were trading at approximately $0.006594, up 12.872% over 24 hours, with contract trading volume of approximately 69.575 million USDT.
Spot and perpetual prices are close, with no clear discount or premium in contract depth for now. However, $0.007030 remains the current 24-hour high, and an intraday test of this level does not count as a confirmed breakout. If a subsequent 1-hour or 4-hour candle closes above it and a retest does not quickly fall back below $0.00689, that would be closer to a valid breakout. Until then, it should still be viewed as a high-volatility rebound.
II. 4-hour trading volume surged, but the most recent 1-hour period has already cooled
The most recent completed 4-hour candle corresponds to 00:00–03:59 Beijing time. It closed at $0.006710, with a high of $0.006890 and a low of $0.006540. Trading volume was approximately 1.0799 million USDT, about 2.07 times the average of 521,700 USDT across the previous 20 completed 4-hour candles. This indicates a clear increase in trading participation during the advance.
However, the most recent completed 1-hour candle (06:00–06:59) closed at $0.006760, with trading volume of approximately 419,200 USDT—only 0.66 times the average of 638,100 USDT across the previous 20 completed 1-hour candles. In other words, the earlier surge in volume has not carried through to the most recent hourly period. Lower volume does not necessarily mean an immediate decline, but it does at least suggest that buyers chasing the price are holding back. A single high-volume 4-hour candle should not be treated as confirmation of a trend.
III. OI is rising rapidly, but negative funding rates are not a buy signal
Binance USDⓈ-M 1-hour OI history shows that over approximately 29 hours, HEMI perpetual open interest grew from 735.04 million to 913.17 million tokens, an increase of about 24.2%. Based on the notional value provided by the API, it rose from approximately 4.341 million USDT to 6.171 million USDT, an increase of about 42.1%. Rising prices alongside expanding open interest indicate a significant increase in leverage participation, but public OI data cannot identify whether the new positions are long or short.
The funding rate shifted from repeatedly being around +0.005% to the latest settled rate of approximately -0.1151% per interval. A negative funding rate only indicates that shorts were relatively crowded at settlement, with payments tilted toward longs. It does not, by itself, mean that “shorts are about to be squeezed” or that “now is a good time to go long.” If the price cannot continue to rise, the high level of open interest could amplify volatility in either direction. If the price continues to rise while the funding rate remains extreme, the cost of chasing the move and the risk of a pullback will both increase.
IV. Watch only three sets of confirmation signals from here
1. Upside confirmation: A completed 1-hour or 4-hour candle closes above $0.007030, holds above $0.00689 on a retest, and trading volume does not continue to run below its recent average. This would be closer to a valid breakout.
2. Near-term strength: $0.00654–$0.00671 marks the low and closing range of the most recent completed 4-hour candle. If a pullback holds this area on lower volume, that would suggest the upward structure still has support. If the price falls back below this area on rising volume, treat it first as a pullback after a spike.
3. Structural invalidation: If a subsequent 4-hour candle closes below $0.00654 and OI rises rather than falls, be alert to expanding volatility driven by new leverage. If the price falls while OI drops rapidly, it looks more like a leverage flush and should not automatically be equated with a trend reversal.
My view is that the key issue for HEMI right now is not “how much it has risen,” but whether short-term volume recovers after the high-volume advance, and which side ultimately bears the rapidly increasing leverage. A closing confirmation above $0.007030 and a closing break below $0.00654 are the more meaningful conditions to watch for the bulls and bears, respectively. Chasing the price in the middle of the range offers an unclear risk-reward profile.
