Russia’s largest bank, Sberbank, has been officially approved as a cryptocurrency custodian to launch Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT products. Sberbank plans to formally launch its first custody services and financial products tied to these crypto assets on December 1. Under the new regulations backed by the Central Bank of Russia, financial institutions must treat digital deposits similarly to traditional assets and securities.

Although traditional banking is rapidly embracing custody and the possibility of offering investment products or loans backed by crypto assets, the government continues to strictly prohibit the use of cryptocurrencies as a means of payment for goods and services nationwide. This shift by Russian banks toward crypto assets is largely driven by the need to seek alternatives and mitigate the impact of international sanctions.
