Russia takes another step toward regulating the cryptocurrency market
Russia has just registered the first authorized cryptocurrency exchange operators and digital asset custodians under its new regulatory framework.
According to the Bank of Russia, 5 organizations have been added to the register of digital depositories and 4 to the register of companies authorized to trade cryptocurrencies. The names include major financial institutions such as Sberbank and VTB. (Bank of Russia)
The new rules came into force on September 1, 2026, bringing these activities under the supervision of the Bank of Russia. Custodians will be able to register and transfer digital assets, while exchange operators will be able to buy and sell cryptocurrencies under the established rules. (Bank of Russia)
One notable example is Sberbank, Russia’s largest bank, which plans to launch its first crypto-related products in December, initially involving Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT, according to information released by the institution.
The move signals an important shift: instead of leaving the entire cryptocurrency market outside the traditional financial system, Russia is building regulated infrastructure for trading and custody of digital assets.
⚠️ Worth noting: regulation does not mean cryptocurrencies are now freely accepted as a means of payment in the country. Using crypto to pay for goods and services remains restricted. (tokenpost.com)
