#币圈的那些年 Two days before the 2021 Black Swan, a friend came to me and said it was easy to make money trading crypto. He asked if I wanted to invest a little and let him handle it. He said it was a sure thing. I was tempted and transferred him $50,000. I told him to let me know if he lost half of it. I figured trading was bound to involve both gains and losses, and thought I could lose up to $25,000 at most.
Over the next few days, I kept checking in with him from time to time, and he always said he was making money. Then, a week later, I opened an account of my own.
I traded ETH on the spot market, buying low and selling high. In a little over half a month, I made around $10,000, and it really did seem easy. So I started buying more and more.
I remember ETH falling steadily from $2,800. When it dropped to around $2,100, I had put almost all my money into it. By then, I was down $50,000 on paper.
I had no idea how much further it would fall. I was new to this and just didn’t feel confident about it. I also needed the money for other things, so I sold everything at around $2,100.
It didn’t seem like such an easy way to make money after all, so I decided to get back the $50,000 I’d invested with him.
At the time, he told me he’d made over $10,000. I said he could keep what he’d earned and just return my $50,000.
He kept putting it off. A week later, after I really pressed him, he finally told me the truth: he’d lost the entire $50,000, along with all of his own money. I was stunned. I said, “How could you possibly have lost it all? Are you lying to me?”
He said, “I was trading futures.” I didn’t even know what futures meant back then, so I looked it up.
I still didn’t believe him, so I asked him to let me log in to his account and check the records.
The transaction history showed that he’d lost all the funds in the account the very next day. For the following month, he kept lying to me. He even borrowed money from me during that time, and I lent it to him. He still hasn’t paid me back. I was such an idiot.
My first one-month stint in crypto ended with a $100,000 loss that drove me out of the market.
