Coinbase has added short-term crypto contracts to its prediction markets section.
They cover 10 tokens, including BTC and ETH, and settle every 15 minutes or 1 hour. The contracts are listed by Kalshi, whose own platform was already offering similar 15-minute markets.
What makes these products interesting is how short a time frame they use for “prediction.”
You’re not judging whether an event will happen in the future, nor making a long-term call on prices.
What you’re really judging is:
Will the price go up or down over the next 15 minutes?
The shorter the time frame, the faster the trading pace—and the greater the impact of fees, spreads, volatility, and settlement rules.
So these products are closer to short-term price speculation than to prediction tools in the traditional sense.
With settlements every 15 minutes in particular, mistakes can compound very quickly.
So when you see the words “prediction market,” don’t jump to conclusions.
First, understand what it’s actually offering:
Price movements over the next few minutes.
Once you understand that, decide whether you really need to participate.
