Many people may not know who the Winklevoss twins are, but the brothers are about to make big moves again.
The story goes back 13 years, when the Winklevoss brothers filed the first spot Bitcoin ETF application in the United States. What’s remarkable is that this was more than a decade before a U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF was actually approved.
Now the Winklevoss brothers are applying for another ETF, but this time it’s not $BTC —they’ve shifted their focus to Zcash.
On October 6, after officially filing an S-1 with the U.S. SEC, they announced plans to launch the Winklevoss Zcash ETF, which is intended to trade on Nasdaq under the ticker WINK.
The fund will directly hold $ZEC , with Gemini acting as custodian. Its annual fee is just 0.25%.
Winklevoss Capital also said it intends to subscribe for up to $100 million worth of shares, though this is currently only a non-binding indication of interest.
What’s even more interesting is that the U.S. already has Grayscale’s Zcash ETF, which charges a hefty 2.5% annual fee. If WINK is approved, its fee will be one-tenth of that.
For ZEC, I think the real significance of this development is that privacy coins are gaining further access to Wall Street’s mainstream investment channels.
🤔 Many people may not know who the Winklevoss brothers are, so here’s a quick introduction.
The Winklevoss brothers are Cameron Winklevoss and Tyler Winklevoss, American twin entrepreneurs.
They first became famous for their dispute with Mark Zuckerberg over the founding of Facebook. They later entered the Bitcoin market early and were among the first investors in the United States to make large-scale investments in crypto assets.
They went on to found the cryptocurrency exchange Gemini. More importantly, in 2013 they submitted a spot Bitcoin ETF application to the U.S. SEC—more than a decade before a U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF was actually approved.
That’s why the market is paying special attention now that they’re applying for a Zcash ETF.
