If you're also an everyday investor who doesn't dare to take a large position in small-cap coins but is afraid of missing out, you can use this approach as a reference. I'm the same way. Experienced traders can skip this; below, I'll share just one portfolio structure that's easier to follow.
Many people think high returns depend on whether you manage to catch a coin that doubles. In fact, what matters more is how much it can contribute to your total assets.
Suppose a small-cap coin doubles, but you only dare to put 20% of your portfolio into it. If your other assets stay unchanged and we ignore fees for now, your total assets would increase by about 20%. At that point, you should ask yourself: how much chasing prices, drawdowns, and project risk did you take on for that 20%?
So, I prefer a “core + satellite” approach.
The core is for mainstream assets that you’re willing to follow over the long term and that are relatively liquid, such as $BTC, $ETH or $BNB. They can still be highly volatile. “Core” is only a relative choice; it doesn’t mean they’re safe, let alone guaranteed to rise.
The satellite portion is for taking part in hot trends and opportunities in smaller coins. The key isn’t to buy more, but to set a position limit in advance: don’t add to a position before your thesis is validated, don’t chase after prices have already surged, and exit if your original thesis no longer holds. If there’s no clear opportunity, it’s better to leave the satellite portion empty.
When checking the market, don’t rush straight to the top gainers list. First see which core assets are stronger and whether trading is active, then check whether capital is spreading to other sectors. Open your market app to understand the market structure—not to let a big green candle rush you into placing an order.
This approach isn’t about “how to make money the fastest,” but “how to stay in the game.” The core lets you participate over time, while the satellite allows for limited experimentation, so you don’t stake all your attention on a single hot trend.
Take a moment today to review your holdings: which are core positions you plan to follow over the long term, and which are satellite positions for temporary trades? Don’t mix the two up anymore.
