According to Jin10, Reuters Tankan survey showed Japanese large manufacturers' sentiment rose to its highest level in nearly five years in October, while non-manufacturing sentiment deteriorated sharply amid rising costs. The Reuters Tankan manufacturing index edged up to 22 from 21 in September, its highest since December 2021. A manager at a precision machinery company wrote that the semiconductor industry remained strong and order volumes over the past four months were 1.5 times normal levels. A respondent at another machinery company said orders and shipments for products serving the semiconductor market were strong. The non-manufacturing index fell to 23 from 29, its lowest since November 2024. Some manufacturers also warned that strong AI-related demand could eventually slow, while service companies said inflation was eroding household purchasing power.
