The UK government has appointed Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, Morgan Stanley, NatWest and RBC Capital Markets as joint lead managers for the UK’s first natively digital government bond, DIGIT (Digital Gilt Instrument). The pilot issuance is expected to take place in the first quarter of 2027.

The bond will be issued on the UK Digital Securities Sandbox platform, using distributed ledger technology throughout issuance and lifecycle management, with on-chain settlement. The six banks will be responsible for underwriting, investor engagement and distribution. The appointment was announced by Lucy Rigby, Economic Secretary to the Treasury, in a keynote speech at UK Digital Assets Week.

The tokenization of sovereign debt has taken another step forward.
