If you’re still using MyNearWallet $NEAR , this is your wake-up call: it plans to officially retire (be deprecated) on October 31.
First, the bottom line: your funds won’t be lost. MyNearWallet is a non-custodial wallet, and your assets have always been on the NEAR blockchain. The wallet is just a “door”—the door may be removed, but the house is still there. But if the door is removed and you haven’t taken your keys with you, that’s on you.
1️⃣ Timeline (from MyNearWallet’s official sunset page): Announcements begin in July; migration guidance launches in August–September; features are gradually scaled back from October to December, shifting to migration and recovery mode; after 2027, only recovery features will remain, and eventually it will become a static information page.
2️⃣ Where to move: The official guidance says Meteor Wallet is expected to be the recommended migration option (with continued MNW maintenance and support for mobile, browser extensions, and web). You can also choose other wallets supported by the NEAR ecosystem.
3️⃣ How to move without things going wrong (based on NEAR’s official guidance and reports by TokenPost / BlockBeats): Test with a small amount first; transfer one asset at a time and wait for it to arrive before transferring the next; don’t delete your MyNearWallet recovery information until you’ve confirmed that all balances have arrived in your new wallet.
4️⃣ The most important rule: No official team or customer support agent will ever ask for your seed phrase, private key, or password. Wallet retirement season is phishing season. Treat any private message offering to “help you migrate” as a scam.
My take: Consolidating the NEAR ecosystem’s wallets from “lots of partly maintained options” to “a few well-maintained ones” is the right direction. Web3 UX should have fewer legacy entry points anyway. But longtime users are most likely to put it off until the last week—don’t wait. Spend five minutes today testing a small transfer.
Just sharing the information, not telling you what to do. Whether to migrate is up to you, but don’t wait until October 31 to remember.
