Today, the Solana Foundation officially launched Solana DvP for banks and large financial institutions. The goal is clear: reduce traditional financial settlements—which can take 1–2 days—to just a few seconds on-chain.
Even more noteworthy, the tool was informed by JPMorgan’s settlement expertise 📌
But one important clarification: JPMorgan was not involved in developing Solana DvP; it provided professional advice on securities settlement.
So what exactly is Solana trying to solve?
After a traditional financial transaction is completed, assets and funds aren’t exchanged instantly. They still have to go through steps such as clearing and custody. The longer the wait, the greater the risk that a counterparty may fail to deliver the assets or funds.
DvP, or “delivery versus payment,” is based on a simple principle:
💰 The assets are delivered only when the money arrives;
📦 When the assets are delivered, the funds must be transferred at the same time.
Solana DvP puts both parties’ information into a single on-chain transaction. Through atomic settlement, assets and funds can be exchanged simultaneously within seconds.
🔥 More importantly, instead of having every institution develop its own custom smart contracts, the Solana Foundation has introduced an open, shared standard and released it under the MIT License.
For institutions, this means that if the tool is widely adopted, they may not need to build a settlement system from scratch every time. The tool also takes into account the specific needs of regulated assets. Solana DvP supports SPL Token and Token-2022, including features such as pausable tokens, permanent delegates, and transfer hooks, allowing issuers to freeze assets in certain situations or add transfer rules.
