Nikkei back above 70,000; Korean memory stocks buck the trend

As of 16:05 JST. The Nikkei closed in the 70,684–70,774 range (+1.05% to +1.18%), with a high of around 70,799; a single official closing figure has not been verified. SoftBank Group (TSE: 9984) was down around 2.5% to 3.1% intraday.

The KOSPI closed at 6,941.39, down 62.35 points/0.89% (Yonhap, Seoul Economic Daily). Foreign investors were net sellers of 1.75 trillion won. Samsung Electronics (KRX: 005930) and SK Hynix (KRX: 000660) were down around 1.8%/3.4% intraday; unofficial closing figures. A-shares are closed until 10/8. The Hang Seng traded in an afternoon range of around 24,180–24,228; the close has not been verified.

Monday: Dow 51,267.90, +0.18%; S&P 7,773.95, +0.66%; Nasdaq 27,477.31, +1.05%, setting another record closing high. NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) was up around 2.1%. S&P futures in the Asian session were around 7,837, up 0.1%.

The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield was around 5.309% in the Asian session, after reaching an overnight high of 5.3493% (the highest since 2002); the 30-year yield was around 5.662%, after reaching a high of 5.703%. The CME-implied probability of a rate hike in October is around 20% (around 70% a week ago). Polymarket's 19.5% is from a prediction market—don't confuse the two. USD/JPY: 157.9–158.1.

Brent settled at 100.32 on Monday and traded around 100.3–100.7 in the Asian session; WTI settled at 89.43 on Monday and traded around 89.6. $BTC was around 85,265, in an 85,010–86,662 range.

U.S. August trade data tonight at 21:30 JST; minutes on Wednesday. Korean stocks are closed Friday.
