That Night, I Learned to Wait

At 3:17 a.m., my phone buzzed and pulled me out of a light sleep.

I opened my eyes. A price alert glowed on the screen: RLC had fallen to $0.38, down more than 60% in 24 hours.

I stared at the number for a full thirty seconds, my emotions all over the place. Three months earlier, I’d bought RLC at $0.91. Back then, it had just climbed from $0.40, and everyone in the community was talking about its potential. Full of hope, I bought in and invested all my savings.

Then it fell.

The balance in my account shrank every day, and my mood sank along with it. For a while, I barely dared to open my trading app. Every time I saw my balance go down, it felt like a weight was pressing on my chest.

For the next two weeks, I chose to step away. After work, I went home, cooked, read, and took walks, trying to shift my attention away from that steadily falling number.

But with crypto, the more you try to forget about it, the more it finds ways to remind you.

One day, I saw someone in a group chat say that the RLC team was still building, and that on-chain data was actually improving. Maybe this drop was an overreaction driven by market sentiment. Half-skeptically, I opened the candlestick chart. Looking at the deep dip from $0.91 to $0.38, a thought suddenly came to me.

If I bought in now, my cost basis would be much lower than before.

I hesitated for a long time, then finally decided to use a small part of the money I had left to buy at $0.39. This time, I didn’t put all my savings in. I only invested what I could afford to lose.

My friends said I was too timid. My mom said I should sell everything and cut my losses. Even I wasn’t sure whether I’d made the right decision.

But this time, I chose a different strategy: after buying, I stopped watching the market. I turned off all notifications from my trading app and focused on work and life.

A month later, RLC began to rebound.

Two months later, it was back at $0.65.

Today, three months later, I got an alert that RLC had touched $0.94.

I opened my account and looked at the number. To my surprise, I felt perfectly calm. From $0.39 to $0.94—that’s more than a 100% gain. Not because I’d made an accurate prediction, but because I’d learned the most important lesson: be patient, and don’t let your emotions take over.

This time, I sold part of my holdings at $0.93 to lock in some gains.

Someone asked me, “What will you do next?”

I said I’d keep holding the rest and see how far it could go. At the same time, I’d remember what this experience taught me: don’t put all your eggs in one basket, and don’t make decisions when you’re at your lowest emotionally.

The most valuable lesson crypto has taught me is that real gains come from rationality and patience, not impulse and fear.
