At an industry summit in Singapore, Vitalik Buterin said that about a month ago, for the first time, he updated ENS information without using an interface. Instead, he had a local AI agent write a script, which took about five minutes to run. He expects AI to directly carry out complex on-chain operations to gradually become commonplace.
The difference lies in what gets left on-chain. When a person clicks through an interface, there is a click behind each transaction. When AI writes and runs a script, the on-chain transaction has the same format; it just lacks that click. On-chain data can verify the transaction itself, but cannot prove whether it reflects the operator’s own intent.
AI is also helping Ethereum’s protocol find vulnerabilities and perform formal verification, so reliability can be built into the protocol layer. But the protocol layer cannot tell whose intent is behind an action. At the interface layer, the question is shifting from who is using it to who is using it on someone else’s behalf.
