Wu Blockchain learned that Roman Storm, co-founder and developer of Tornado Cash, posted that the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York (SDNY) had filed its latest legal brief, and that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) was pushing hard to secure his conviction. Storm said the legal nightmare, in which he faces decades in prison for “writing code,” has dragged on for 1,139 days. He specifically noted that the U.S. Treasury Department had acknowledged that mixer rules would have a “chilling effect on legitimate activity” and withdrawn its proposal, yet prosecutors continue to insist in the criminal trial that “legitimate transactions conducted through Tornado Cash are also criminal.” Storm criticized the prosecution, saying that while the executive branch had acknowledged the policy was misguided, prosecutors treat every interaction as a crime. He warned that this case against an open-source developer is setting a dangerous precedent.
