Meta’s $628 Billion in Commitments: Debt or the Cost of AI Expansion?

Meta is rapidly expanding its AI infrastructure—and its future financial commitments are growing along with it. According to its financial filings, the total value of its non-cancellable contractual commitments and future lease obligations is estimated at approximately $628 billion. But here’s the important nuance: this does not mean Meta has $628 billion in hidden debt.

About $68 billion of Meta’s new commitments relate to data center lease agreements signed in July 2026. A significant portion of these expenses is tied to the future expansion of AI infrastructure. Under US GAAP, some future lease obligations are not recorded on the balance sheet until the lease begins, so standard debt metrics may not show the full scale of future payments.

For investors, the key question isn’t “Does Meta have $628 billion in debt?” but whether future AI revenue and cash flows can justify such large commitments. If demand for Meta’s AI solutions and advertising technologies grows, these investments could become the foundation for future profits. But if AI monetization lags behind spending, the high level of commitments could increase risks to the company’s valuation.
