**Gold This Week: Yields in the Spotlight**
**Tuesday, October 6:** 3-year Treasury auction ($58 billion)
**Wednesday, October 7:** 10-year auction ($39 billion) + Fed meeting minutes (September 15–16)
**Current situation:**
• Gold is near $4,150 after losing 3.4% last week
• The 10-year yield is near 5.25%, with some yields at their highest levels in more than 20 years
• September jobs came in at just 29,000 (versus 90,000 expected), bringing the odds of an October rate hike down to about 20% from 70%
• But the odds of a December hike remain high
**What to watch:**
🔸 The 10-year auction matters more to gold than the 3-year auction: watch the bid-to-cover ratio and the difference from the expected yield. Weak demand means higher yields and more pressure on gold
🔸 The minutes are from a meeting at which rates were raised for the first time in 3 years, so any hawkish tone (Hawkish) would strengthen the case for a December hike and weigh on gold
🔸 Less hawkish minutes (Dovish), combined with strong auction demand, could give gold some breathing room
Weak jobs data alone wasn’t enough to support gold, as high yields, a strong dollar, and oil prices continue to weigh on it.
