If leverage drops from 20x to 5x, will the funding fee go down too? If the position size, mark price, and funding rate stay the same, the absolute funding fee won’t decrease. To review this cost, first look at the notional size of your position.

For Binance USDⓈ-M perpetual contracts, the funding fee is calculated by multiplying the mark price by the position size, then by the funding rate for that period. It is settled between longs and shorts: when the rate is positive, longs pay; when it’s negative, the reverse applies. Margin acts as a buffer against price movements, but it doesn’t directly appear in this fee formula.

For example, suppose the notional position is 10,000 USDT at settlement and the funding rate is 0.01%. The paying side owes 1 USDT for that period. With 500 USDT of margin, the fee is 0.2% of the margin; increasing the margin to 2,000 USDT lowers that proportion to 0.05%, but the absolute fee remains 1 USDT. Adding margin can increase your risk buffer, but it won’t reduce your position size.

As of October 5 at 17:04, the last 12 settled funding rates for Binance ZECUSDT were all positive at 0.01%, with intervals of about 8 hours. Historical rates are no guarantee of future rates. There may not be exactly three settlements every day going forward, and historical rates shouldn’t be annualized as if they were guaranteed returns. Actual fees can also change with the mark price, position size, and settlement rules.

For an existing trading plan, it’s worth comparing the price movement you’re aiming to capture with what remains after deducting opening and closing fees, potential funding fees, and slippage. Simply adjusting the leverage setting won’t solve the cost issue. If you hold the position longer, rates rise, or settlements become more frequent, the price movement that once seemed sufficient may be eaten away, so you’ll need to recalculate your plan. Even if you receive funding fees, that doesn’t guarantee a profit; an adverse price move could wipe out that income.

When reviewing a trade, record price P&L, funding fees, and trading fees separately. Check the contract’s countdown and current rate before settlement, then check the actual transaction record afterward. Don’t wait until the final few seconds and gamble on whether you’ll be charged. Do you usually look at your position’s P&L, or the result after all these fees are deducted?
