The keys to Flávio Bolsonaro’s victory and Lula da Silva’s defeat in Brazil’s first round Flávio Bolsonaro, son of President Jair Bolsonaro, secured a decisive victory in Brazil’s presidential first round, winning 47% of the vote and defeating leftist Lula da Silva, who received 45%.

The Liberal Party, to which Flávio belongs, also performed strongly in gubernatorial and parliamentary elections, securing a majority in the Senate and Chamber of Deputies. Flávio enters the runoff strengthened, while Lula acknowledges the painful defeat. The Liberal Party elected five governors in the first round, surpassing Lula’s Workers’ Party, which managed to elect only three.
