$2 million raised over six years, but $1.5 million came after a single event.

According to this U.S. Treasury sanctions designation, the network raised more than $2 million for Hamas between 2020 and 2026, including $1.5 million after the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel. The fundraising was conducted in France under the guise of humanitarian work, with some funds sent to Gaza in cryptocurrency.

What changed was the second half of the story.

That $1.5 million made up the bulk of the total. By listing it separately, the Treasury is also signaling that cryptocurrency was just one link in the chain, not the main channel. What really needs scrutiny is the gap between the “humanitarian” label and where the money went—much like how the hardest things to trace in a ledger are rarely the large sums, but the small transactions.

Back to that $2 million: the entire increase came after the attacks.
