Today’s Crypto Market Highlights (October 5, 2026)

Bitcoin has taken another shot at $87,000! It briefly neared an eight-month high in early trading—just a few hundred dollars below the late-September peak of around $87,400—before pulling back to trade around $86,000. It’s still up 1%–2% over the past 24 hours, with gains of about 2.7% so far this month. Softer US jobs data fueled rate-cut expectations, lifting risk assets across the board. Total market capitalization climbed back above $3 trillion, and the Fear & Greed Index rose above 70, into “Greed” territory. The “Uptober” narrative is officially underway. October has historically seen sizable average gains, and bulls are eyeing the 2026 opening price of $87,570 as a key resistance level.

Altcoins are mixed, but there are plenty of standouts: Cardano (ADA) surged more than 10% to a five-month high; DOGE led major coins with gains of over 3%; and XRP and BNB followed, rising 1%–2%. On the institutional front, Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) now holds more than $72 billion worth of Bitcoin, and Saylor continues to hint at further purchases.

Major regulatory and institutional developments:
A joint venture between OKX and ICE, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, has officially filed an application with the SEC. It plans to launch a 24/7 tokenized US stock trading platform under an innovation exemption framework, initially covering 63 NYSE-listed stocks and settling trades in stablecoins such as USDC and USDT—a further step toward the convergence of TradFi and crypto.
El Salvador has also received its latest $138 million disbursement from the IMF, while Bitcoin-related exemptions remain in effect.

This week, keep an eye on the Federal Reserve meeting minutes (Wednesday), Treasury auctions, the Ethereum Glamsterdam testnet upgrade, and potential volatility from large token unlocks for HYPE, ENA, APT, and others.

There’s never a shortage of stories in crypto. Can Bitcoin truly break through $87K and open the path to $90K? Could tokenized stocks become the catalyst for the next wave of institutional adoption?
