A 60-year-old woman in Hong Kong lost US$2.8 million to a fake cryptocurrency expert after paying deposits to prove that her account was not laundering money. This is a clear example of one of the most sophisticated and cruel scam methods today, often known as “pig butchering” or romantic/financial investment scams, combined with identity impersonation intimidation.
Victims are typically contacted through social media or messaging apps. Their trust is earned over weeks or months, and then they’re convinced to invest in fake platforms that display fictitious profits. When the victim tries to withdraw their money, the scammers invent excuses—such as taxes, audit fees, or, in this case, false money-laundering investigations—to extort them and force them to deposit more funds under the false promise that doing so will unlock their savings.
