According to CNBC, President Donald Trump said he would give every adult U.S. citizen $5,000 if Republicans win the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 2026 midterm elections, while also announcing one-time $90 payments to 20.8 million Medicare beneficiaries. The $90 payments are scheduled to arrive this month and are funded through the Medicare Improvement Fund, while $500 Obamacare refund checks began going out last week to about 950,000 people who bought unsubsidized coverage through the federal marketplace. Trump has not said who would authorize the $5,000 payments or where the money would come from, and sending that amount to every adult citizen would cost roughly $1.2 trillion and require congressional approval. Reuters analysis found 71% of the Obamacare money, or $339 million, is going to residents of 13 states with competitive Senate and gubernatorial races. Polling cited in the article showed voters were split on the proposal, with 47% to 48% in a Rasmussen Reports survey, while 70% of Wisconsin respondents in a Marquette Law School poll opposed it.
