AI token sector rose 54% in September—more than twice the broader market. But before you fall for FOMO, let’s break it down with one question: Is this real, or is it yet another "storytelling"?
First, look at the "it looks real" side:
· It’s not a mindless broad rally—there are project-level catalysts: NEAR’s secret transactions milestone, and Bittensor (TAO) subnets going live—there’s actual progress, not just call-and-pump talk.
· Talking points stand: The AI infrastructure bottleneck is "compute power + the intelligence layer". TAO, FET, and RENDER are the most direct expressions of it in crypto. It’s the same big picture I’ve been talking about—x402, DePIN, and 57% traffic. To run AI, you need a decentralized resource layer.
· The TAO that is leading the rally is up +33% over the past week—truly real, measurable gains with real volume and momentum.
But on the “be careful” side (discipline edition):
· The sector’s beta is extremely high—today it’s already pausing in the middle of the run: FET +6.8%, TAO +4.9%, NEAR +4.4% are still green, but RENDER is -1% and AR is -4.8%, showing divergence. After the +54%, chasing at the “everyone is shouting AI coins” spot—the risk-to-reward isn’t pretty.
· “Good story beats” ≠ “This coin will win”: in the decentralized compute race, the value captured at the end may only be by one or two—same lesson I wrote yesterday about Blast: hype/usage ≠ value capture.
· Harsh comparison: up above you’ve got centralized giants like Anthropic, OpenAI, and x402 taking the same slice. For decentralized AI coins to last, they must prove they have something big players can’t provide.
So how to look at it: I agree with the direction (AI needs a decentralized resource layer—that’s a real trend); but after a sector has already run up for a while, and when it starts diverging on the same day, the disciplined approach is to “look for laggards with solid fundamentals, add in batches, and set stop-losses,” not to chase the most explosive one.
One sentence: this time’s AI coin narrative is more “substantive,” but even with a substantive narrative plus prices after a run, you still need discipline to enter—get it right, and buy it right.
