#以太坊验证者退出队列增392%
Core Data

Since early October, the size of the Ethereum validator exit queue has surged by 392%. The peak amount of queued ETH reached 850,736 ETH, with an estimated waiting time of about 14.77 days—setting the largest queue size this year.

The spark: MetaMask Staking infrastructure compromised

1. Background: MetaMask’s staking service infrastructure was breached. The attacker briefly moved block rewards of 0.36 ETH. The official said users’ wallet assets themselves were not directly stolen, but due to security risk controls, it initiated a preventive mass validator-exit procedure.

2. Scale: Approximately 17,000 validators voluntarily applied to exit, corresponding to 523,000 ETH. This accounted for the majority of the total queued amount this time. Many of these validators’ operations are heavily linked to Lido staking services, with plans to complete the exit process by October 7.

3. Compounding factors: In addition to the security incident, some market stakers took profits, further driving up the exit queue.

Primer on the underlying mechanism

The Ethereum protocol sets an upper limit on the exit rate. The number of validators allowed to exit at the same time is fixed. This is intended to prevent large amounts of staked ETH from being withdrawn instantly, which could threaten network security. Once the number of validators requesting exits far exceeds the protocol’s daily processing limit, it results in a backlog queue and lengthens the waiting period.
