$DAI evaporates 305,000 USD due to a familiar scam trick, yet the victim still fell for it

Someone has just lost about $305,000 DAI simply because they copied the wrong wallet address from their transaction history. The scammer pre-sets a fake address with the exact same beginning and ending as the real one, sends a tiny “dust” amount so that the fake address appears in the victim’s history, and then waits for the victim to paste it by mistake when transferring a large sum.

GoPlus Security confirms this incident and describes the exact technique above. They also warn that this kind of “address poisoning” has now been fully automated—everything from target discovery, to generating fake addresses, to laundering funds through mixers.

GoPlus says they’re tracking the stolen funds; while nothing has been disclosed yet, they’ve already found some leads.

This doesn’t spare anyone—any wallet that has ever received an unusual “dust” payment could be on the radar. The habit of copying addresses from transaction history, thinking it’s convenient, is precisely the loophole.

Something worth watching today: how many other wallets have also been caught by this trick but haven’t been detected yet.
