MSTR surged 1.80% in one day. But over the past 4 hours, the contract open interest actually fell by 0.4%

📈 MSTR Strategy +1.80%

MSTR is now 163.87. Today’s low is 160.81 and the high is 164.71. The current price is only a breath away from the high—basically sitting right at the top edge of the day’s range. Total trading volume over 24 hours: 33.23 million USDT. The price was pushed upward all the way, and before the close it stayed glued to the high. Just looking at the candlestick, it’s a clean bullish move.

But when you look at the contract positions, something’s off. The price is rising, yet the 4-hour contract open interest is -0.4%—a difference of 2.2 percentage points between the two. If there were genuinely new money coming in bullish, the position should rise along with the price. Right now positions are shrinking while the price keeps climbing. This segment looks more like someone is closing positions and exiting, passively pushing the price upward. Shorts buying back to close would produce exactly this kind of path: the more the order book rises, the fewer positions there are on the exchange.

Now look at the long account share: 58.9%. In terms of number of accounts, longs are clearly in the lead. But positions aren’t increasing. More accounts on the long side, yet no additional position growth—suggests retail traders are bullish and expect a move up, but the people who actually pay money to add positions aren’t keeping up. This rally is rather hollow: it looks lively, but nobody is adding fuel underneath.

🎯 How to interpret it
This 1.80% isn’t yet evidence of anyone truly buying in with real money. If you chase in at 164.71 and buy there, the chances are high that you’re buying the price left behind by someone else closing.
If the price holds above 164.71 while the open interest flips from -0.4% to increasing, then that earlier judgment wouldn’t hold—because new money would be entering.
Watch the next 4-hour change in contract open interest, and also see whether the line at 164.71 actually breaks.

As the move up to 163.87 happens, is it new longs buying, or shorts buying back to close? Whether the next 4-hour open interest is rising or shrinking will tell you.
