Trump handed the White House’s AI banner to Jay Clayton.
Clayton, who became the U.S. Director of National Intelligence in August, now has an additional role: White House AI affairs officer. The task force he leads is called the “Superintelligence Force,” a name drawn from an executive order issued on September 29, under which federal agencies would henceforth refer to artificial intelligence as superintelligence. Within 120 days, they are to deliver a report assessing AI risks and also examining how reporting mechanisms for data breaches and hacker attacks should be improved.
The roster is interesting. The vice chair is FTC Chair Ferguson and Scott Kupor. Members include Vance, Hegseth, Bessent, and Wiles. External advisors also include Sacks and Rice.
Clayton’s position is that the risk of not leading is high. The voluntary agreements Trump signed in these past few months remain unchanged: audits rely on companies’ own initiative, with no new legislation.
In the second term, the AI lead has moved to a second place—this time under the intelligence portfolio. #AI
