Saw Cointelegraph / PANews: The Russian Ministry of Finance said that as of October 1, some employees will receive their salaries for the first time in digital rubles—voluntarily opening digital ruble accounts on the central bank platform. They are paid in the central bank’s digital currency, not ordinary bank deposits.

On the “hard figures” side: the Ministry of Finance hasn’t disclosed how many people were covered or the total amount. But in the 2025 federal budget pilot, wages, stipends, and certain government procurement combined received about 16 million digital rubles (about $192,000). This time, they are connecting that same channel to payroll disbursements within the ministry. The central bank and the Ministry of Finance are also jointly pushing digital rubles into the budget payment workflow.

In April, the EU also pre-sanctioned digital rubles—so a sovereign CBDC payroll rollout first, and the scale and degree of compulsion will be assessed later.
