According to Hong Kong 01, on October 3 Hong Kong police received a report from a 60-year-old woman. The victim had previously met, online, a person who claimed to be an “investment expert.” She was then lured into making cryptocurrency investments through a fake investment website. The platform later demanded that she pay a “margin” on the grounds that the investment account had not been used for money laundering. Between April 14 and September 22, the victim made multiple transfers to the designated investment account, for a total loss of about HK$21.5 million (approximately US$2.74 million). She then grew suspicious and reported the matter to the police. Police initially classified the case as “obtaining property by deception” and it is being followed up by the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Sau Mau Ping District, with no arrests made so far.
