David Robinson, the leader of OpenAI’s safety systems team, left the company last week. This is another staffing change in the safety department, following the departure earlier this year of the safety lead, Johannes Heidecke.
Robinson previously handled policy planning at OpenAI and helped improve model transparency, including by developing system cards. It is not yet clear why he left the company.
Before leaving, Robinson had publicly expressed concerns about the pace of change at OpenAI. He said that even though the company was undergoing major changes, it was still not certain whether that pace was enough to meet the challenges posed by highly capable AI models.
OpenAI also announced on Thursday that the company has terminated its collaboration with three researchers for violating policies on sharing sensitive information. At the developer conference on Tuesday, CEO Sam Altman emphasized that AI safety work and ensuring AI operates in line with human goals must come before efforts to improve model capabilities.
