Saw a notice from Canada’s Prime Minister’s Office: Carney officially launched the “Prime Minister’s National AI Commission” on October 2. Among the 13 people listed are “AI Godfather” Bengio, Mila CEO Pisano, Cloudflare co-founder Zatlyn, and others.
The commission’s mandate is to provide independent recommendations for the “AI for All” strategy—accelerating implementation, nurturing domestic champions, and building sovereign AI infrastructure—while also watching risks to security and democracy. The official also sets five-year goals: to add an extra C$200 billion in growth and create about 250,000 AI-related jobs.
The advisory panel is not a legislative body; whether the money and procurement can keep up still depends on the first batch of recommendations.
