šStocks rose for a second day. The Dow gained 250.4 (+0.5%) to 51,176.96; the S&P 500 added 56.3 (+0.7%) to 7,722.72; and the Nasdaq rose 319.3 (+1.2%) to 27,190.86. For the week: Dow -1.3%, S&P -0.3%, Nasdaq +0.5%.
September payrolls came in at +29K versus roughly 90K expected. Unemployment edged up to 4.2% from 4.1%; average hourly earnings rose 0.1% m/m and 3.0% y/y. Revisions cut 60K from prior months. October hike odds are now around 18ā23%, down from about 64% a week ago, though a December hike is still priced in. Itās a soft jobs report, not yet a rate-cut story.
The dollar fell 0.2% to 101.92 on Friday but is still up about 0.9% for the week. The 10-year yield rose 3bp to 5.276%, easing from Thursdayās 5.344%, its highest level since 2002. WTI settled at $91.11 (-1.9%); Brent was near $102.25, recovering its early dip.
