Between the flowers, a jug of wine—alone I drink with no companion.
I lift my cup to invite the bright moon;
Facing my shadow, we become three.
The moon understands not my drinking;
The shadow only follows me.
For a time I will share the moon and its shadow;
Let us enjoy ourselves while spring is still here.
As I sing, the moon lingers and wanders;
As I dance, my shadow flutters and scatters.
When awake, we meet in convivial joy;
When drunk, each is scattered away.
Forever I bind myself to this passionless play;
Someday I shall meet you—far away, among the clouds and the Milky Way.
