Planet Labs Expands Orbital Fleet Through Google Partnership
Planet Labs has successfully launched its next-generation hyperspectral satellite, Tanager-2, along with 18 SuperDove satellites and the Suncatcher prototype satellite—developed in partnership with Google—into orbit.
The company announced that initial contact with the launched satellites has been established and that commissioning processes are underway.
With the launch of the new Tanager-2 hyperspectral satellite and 18 SuperDove satellites featuring advanced sensor infrastructure, Planet Labs aims to enhance its global imaging capabilities and deepen its efforts in greenhouse gas monitoring and environmental observation.
The Suncatcher prototype, part of the mission, is a joint project with the Google Research team; it will test in-orbit AI data processing capabilities—utilizing Google’s custom AI chips (Trillium TPUs)—and space-based data center technologies.
