According to CNBC, Burger King is on track to sell about 200 company-operated U.S. restaurants to franchisees by the end of the year as part of a broader refranchising plan, after parent Restaurant Brands International bought the chain’s largest U.S. franchisee, Carrols Restaurant Group, in 2024 for roughly $1 billion. Burger King U.S. President Tom Curtis said the chain now expects to sell only about 200 restaurants in 2026, down from an earlier target of about 300, as it works toward a long-term goal of keeping about 300 company-operated locations and having franchisees run the rest of its more than 6,000 U.S. restaurants. The company said the turnaround has already helped Burger King overtake Wendy’s as the No. 2 burger chain in the U.S. by system sales, while domestic same-store sales rose 8.5% in its latest quarter versus 0.8% for McDonald’s U.S. business.
