IMF Approves $139 Million in Funding for El Salvador
Bitcoin—The Country Receives a Key Infusion of Capital
Brothers
El Salvador’s Bitcoin experiment
has reached another critical milestone
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved a disbursement of about $139 million to El Salvador
This is part of its $1.4 billion lending program
More interestingly
in this approval process
the IMF granted a waiver for deviations from prior Bitcoin-related conditions involving El Salvador
El Salvador is the world’s first country to classify BTC as legal tender
It has been under close IMF scrutiny for a long time
This waiver doesn’t mean they’ve loosened their Bitcoin policy
The IMF allows this disbursement
but clearly requires that they do not continue accumulating BTC
and to control the scale of the country’s Bitcoin holdings
reduce fiscal risk
This money is mainly used to stabilize the country’s finances,
replenish foreign exchange reserves,
and keep the national economy steady
This is a short-term boost to sentiment
El Salvador’s debt crisis has been eased
and the market’s earlier concern
about the risk that the country would sell Bitcoin to repay debts has decreased
That reduces selling pressure on “the big pie”
But at the same time, the IMF has limited their ability to keep adding to BTC
which also means that in the short term there won’t be any more large, country-level purchase orders
Just watch the news
whatever will be, will be
