The cause is that the Gateway Addresses feature after Hard Fork 6 is missing an authentication step. The criminals only need to create a gateway, and then they can mint tokens: on August 29, they minted 18.4 million $ZANO; by September 25, they minted an additional 18.4 million $ZANO along with the fUSD token.
Ironically, because Zano’s anonymity mechanism fully mixes the fake tokens into normal transactions, it’s impossible to blacklist or freeze them. The team had no choice but to take the most painful measure: rolling back the blockchain by 30 days to block 3,833,000.
Deleting a month of the ledger is a double shock—hurting liquidity while also raising questions about decentralization.
