The International Financial Association’s “Global Debt Monitoring” report dated September 23 shows that global debt reached a record high of $365 trillion, up by $10 trillion over the first half. Emerging market debt increased by $6.5 trillion to $110 trillion, with China contributing the most. The San Francisco Fed’s September 28 report noted that the share of U.S. Treasuries held by foreign investors has fallen from a peak of over 50% in the late 2000s to about 30% at the beginning of 2026. Since 2023, issuers of stablecoins have increased their purchases of short-term U.S. Treasuries at a faster rate than Japan. The bank expects that by 2030, demand for stablecoins for short-term U.S. Treasuries may nearly double to about $400 billion. (Source: ME)
